Legendary Edin Džeko ended his international career last night in Zenica, as the match against Sweden was his last one in the jersey of the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Džeko’s farewell attracted widespread attention from the European public, and the Italian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina sent a message to the Diamond.
The Statement from the Italian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina is transmitted in full below:
“After Edin Džeko played the last match for his national football team yesterday, the Embassy of Italy in Sarajevo joined the fans across Bosnia and Herzegovina – as well as in Italy in celebrating one exceptional career and a footballer who inspired generations.
Džeko holds a special place in the hearts of Italian football fans, who followed and loved him during his remarkable years in Serie A. His talent, determination, and sportsmanship made him a true ambassador of football, who connected people far beyond the boundaries of the sport.
The final whistle may symbolize the end of an exceptional chapter, but memories, respect, and friendship that football helped build between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy will remain.
And thank you for your words before the Bosnia and Herzegovina- Italy match in Zenica, Captain.
Thank you, Diamond. Grazie, Edin, Cigno di Sarajevo,” the statement said.
As a reminder, Džeko spent a significant portion of his career in Italy, where he played for many years for Roma and Inter, while briefly wearing the Fiorentina jersey towards the end of his career.
In Italy, Džeko earned the nickname “The Swan of Sarajevo” (Cigno di Sarajevo).
