Italy Undisputed Champion In The Production And Export Of Pasta

The countries of the European Union (EU) produced six million tons of pasta in 2024, with a total value of 9.1 billion euros, and Italy is still the undisputed champion in the production of pasta, the EU statistical agency Eurostat announced yesterday.

Compared to 2023, the production of pasta in the EU was five percent higher in value, although it was three percent lower in quantity.

More than two-thirds of all pasta in the EU, specifically 69 percent or 4.1 tons, was produced in Italy.

Far behind it in second place is Spain, with 367.000 tons or six percent, ahead of Germany, which produced five percent of pasta in the EU or 290.000 tons.

In the same year, 2024, EU member states exported 2.9 million tons of pasta, and imported 1.7 million tons, with Italy again convincingly leading with exports of 2.2 million tons.

Most of the total exports in the EU are related to exports to other EU member states (55 percent), and somewhat less (45 percent) to third countries.

Among those countries to which most was exported, and which are not part of the EU, at the top are the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (U.S.) with 25 and 23 percent respectively.

At the same time, although it is third in Europe in the production of spaghetti, rigatoni, penne, fusilli, tagliatelle, and all other types of pasta, Germany, with 468.000 tons, was responsible for 28 percent of the total pasta imports into the EU, with almost one hundred thousand tons more than France, in second place.
