MEP Dietmar Koster commented on his Facebook profile the intention of High Representative Christian Schmidt to impose the Election Law and changes to the Constitution.
“The High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the German politician Christian Schmidt, with his powers, wants to implement an electoral reform for the upcoming elections on October 2, which would strengthen the ethnic division in the country,” said Koster.
He added that such a solution would make it impossible for the representatives of peoples who in certain cantons make up less than 3 percent of the population to run for the House of Peoples of the Federation.
“This is not only legally controversial, but politically it would also mean a big step backwards for Bosnia and Herzegovina in overcoming the ethnic division in the country,” pointed out Koster.
He believes that Bosnia and Herzegovina needs a reform of voting rights that corresponds to the principle of equal voting for all.
“This is a standard in the European Union. High Representative’s proposal contradicts the decision of the European Parliament from July 6 this year,” concluded Koster.
