Under the slogan “Together we fight, together we will succeed!” North Macedonia celebrates Independence Day today.
On this day, 33 years ago, more than 95 percent of citizens voted for an independent and sovereign state in a referendum.
Previously, on January 25, 1991, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the first multi-party Macedonian Assembly, and two days later, the deputies elected Kira Gligorov as the first president of the independent and sovereign Republic of Macedonia, reminds Radio Free Europe.
President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova sent a congratulatory message to the citizens, in which she points out that the duty of Macedonian leaders is to “put aside divisions and unite around the common good and public interest”.
“We must invest all our personal and institutional capacities in order to make the Republic of Macedonia a decent place to live, which will give equal chances for progress to all its citizens, a republic which will care for the best, include the different, in solidarity with the vulnerable and fair to all”, says Davkova in the congratulatory message.
The President of the Assembly Afrim Gashi said the day before yesterday at the reception he organized in the Legislative Chamber on the occasion of Independence Day, that there is no more important moment in the history of a country than its independence.
The President of the Assembly emphasized that everyone has their merit and contribution to these achievements, stressing that one should not be nihilistic and defeatist.
“However, on its 33rd birthday, North Macedonia is a member of the most powerful NATO security alliance, which guarantees peace on its borders, which is extremely important for any project, and is well on its way to joining the largest successful union of democracy, peace, of human rights and well-being which is the European Union,” said Gashi.
As part of the celebration of Independence Day, the Macedonian Philharmonic in Skopje will host a formal academy where the Prime Minister of Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, will address the guests.
