Malta to recognize Palestinian State Next Month

Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Sunday that Malta will recognize the State of Palestine next month.

The announcement came during a political event where Abela raised local and global issues, with a particular focus on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to this human tragedy that is worsening every day,” the Maltese newspaper quoted Abela as saying, referring to the brutal Israeli bombing of Gaza, which has killed nearly 54,000 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children.

Abela said the move was a moral responsibility and that Palestine would be recognized after a conference on June 20.

The prime minister was also shocked by the tragic deaths of nine children of Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar on Saturday when Israeli forces bombed their home in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, seriously injuring her doctor husband and leaving only one of their children alive.

Malta is ready to welcome Dr. Ala Al-Najjar and her family to the country, Abela said, AA writes.
