missMISS Universe Australia Monika Radulovic has told of her family’s struggle and ultimate success after leaving war torn Bosnia in the 1990s.

Radulovic, 24, who hails from the Sydney suburb of Hurstville, left Bosnia when she was two years old.

Her parents, Goran and Vinka, had very successful lives and careers working as an architect and lawyer when the war started.

“My parents left because of the war, they didn’t want to raise a child in a war-torn country so we fled as refugees to Denmark,” she said.

“We were there for a year and then we migrated to Australia.

She went to school at Hurstville Public School, and every day she says her parents have inspired her.

“They were struggling, but they wanted us to feel normal,” she said.

“My parents courage and bravery has really inspired me to be so driven.

“They instilled in me that education is so important.”

Radulovic wants to used her history as she embarks on her year as Miss Universe Australia, including at the coming international pageant.

“I see how amazing our country is,” she said.

“Australia really does open its arms to people of all races and nationalities.
