Monument to Fallen British Soldiers Erected at Residence of British Embassy

nigel-casey-reutersThere was a ceremony this morning at the residency of the British Embassy in Sarajevo for the new monument dedicated to fallen British soldiers that lost their lives in BiH from 1992-1994.

It is a monument erected in memory to 59 fallen soldiers of Great Britain that served on a mission in BiH.

The ceremony was attended by a large number of members of the military mission of Great Britain and the Irish Guard, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps in BiH, among which was the Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and the Special EU Representative to BiH Peter Sorensen.

The British Ambassador to BiH Nigel Casey, who welcomed the guests, said that the monument represents a reminder for the serious commitment of British soldiers to peace in BiH and its preservation after the war.

“This monument is for all the men and women who lost their lives in BiH. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten”, said Casey.

He recalled that monuments to fallen soldiers were raised throughout BiH, and that he personally visited the monument in Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje that was erected to the first fallen British soldiers in BiH.

“One of the monuments is located in Butmir, and since Butmir’s function is going to be changed, we wanted to have a place where friends, soldiers and their families could remember the fallen soldiers’’, said the British Ambassador.

Father Robin Fox expressed dedication to the monument in a short ceremony, and after this ceremony participants marked the Day of the Armed Forces of Great Britain.
