More than 60 Percent of Adults in Bosnia and Herzegovina Overweight

More than 60 percent of adults in Bosnia and Herzegovina are overweight, and obesity significantly increases the risk of colorectal cancer. During “Blue March” – a month dedicated to colorectal cancer prevention – experts particularly emphasize the importance of prevention and early detection.

Obesity is a global problem affecting more than one billion people, and in Bosnia and Herzegovina approximately one in five adults is considered obese, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Experts warn that obesity increases the risk of several types of cancer, including liver, pancreatic, breast, and colorectal cancer, because excess body fat triggers inflammation and hormonal imbalances that promote tumor development.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, obesity is increasingly affecting children and young people, raising the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disorders, and placing additional strain on the healthcare system.

At the same time, modern therapies for weight management are not yet widely available, which further complicates the effective fight against obesity and its consequences.

Experts emphasize that healthy habits, regular physical activity, and routine medical check-ups can significantly reduce these risks. They also remind that during “Blue March,” free screenings for early detection of colorectal cancer are organized across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
