Munich Airport was forced to temporarily close last night after a series of drone reports, disrupting regular air traffic and causing major disruption.
According to the airport authorities, 17 flights were cancelled, affecting around 3,000 passengers, while 15 incoming flights were diverted to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Vienna. Flightradar showed several aircraft circling the airport for around 11pm before being diverted to alternative destinations.
Traffic returned to normal briefly on Friday morning, but drones were soon spotted again above the airport area, Federal Police spokesman Stefan Bajer told Bild. He said officers on the ground had confirmed the presence of the drones, but it was nighttime and it was not possible to determine the type or size of the aircraft.
Police have opened an investigation, but have so far been unable to identify the drones or their owners.
