Nejla Remezić: I am leaving Sweden and coming back to Bosnia!

Nejla Remezić Sweden hayat.baWhen someone young leaves Bosnia and Herzegovina looking for luck somewhere else, it hardly even makes the news anymore, but when a nineteen-year-old girl decides to move from Sweden, where she was born, to Bosnia and Herzegovina, it certainly does. That is the story of Nejla Remezić, nineteen-year-old girl who belongs to the second generation of BH citizens born outside of the borders of B&H.

Many young people of your age in B&H would certainly be surprised by your decision. Why are you leaving Sweden?

Sweden is the country where I was born and where I have been living for my entire life, but Bosnia and Herzegovina is my homeland and I feel that deep inside. Since I was born in 1996 until today, I have spent almost every vacation in B&H, and my memories and emotions are always there. After finishing high school in Malmo where I live now, I decided to move to Sarajevo and continue studies.

Don’t universities in Sweden offer higher quality of studying and greater opportunities for success?

I’m sure that the Swedish education system has enviable standards which are among the highest and best ones in the world, but I can’t learn there what I currently want to learn. Education, knowledge and maturing are not solely studying from the books; there are parents, upbringing, socializing and warmth that lack in the West. I believe I will be a complete person if I go to study in B&H. I will satisfy my emotions, since the world is still a little colder here.

You were born in Sweden, but your origins are from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Where are your parents from?

My father was born in Sweden, and mom in Germany. My younger sister and I are the second generation born outside of the borders of B&H. however, my grandparents are from Sarajevo and I am moving in with them in our family house. Although they were born in Western Europe, my parents have lived in B&H for one period of time, before the aggression on B&H.

What are you going to study in Sarajevo?

I will most probably enroll in the International University of Sarajevo, department of international relations. I was also focused on social sciences in high school, so it will be compatible. I wish to work in the field of international relations and represent B&H in the world.
