Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar, had been eliminated, Reuters reported.
Sinwar, one of Hamas’ most wanted members, was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Palestinian militant group who was killed earlier.
Mohammed Sinwar was promoted to the highest ranks of the Palestinian militant group Hamas last year after Israel killed his brother Yahya Sinwar during fighting in the ongoing war in Gaza.
Yahya Sinwar was the “mastermind” of the October 2023 attack on Israel that sparked the war. After that attack, he was declared Hamas leader, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Iran in an Israeli strike.
