New Street Signs set up in Srebrenica

On April 15th, the Srebrenica Municipal Assembly decided to change the names of streets in the town and the village of Skelani, in the Srebrenica municipality. Yesterday, that decision has been implemented.

Marsala Tita Street is now named Republika Srpska (RS) Street, and Mihajlo Bjelakovic Square, named after the partisan hero who died fighting against the Ustasha in 1944 in this town, is now called RS Square.

Srebrenica City Park has been renamed Major Kosta Todorovic Park (Todorovic was a member of the Zlatibor Volunteer Detachment during World War I, killed in Srebrenica in 1914), and Reufa Selmanagica Crnog Street is now Dubrovacka Street.

Vinogrdiste Street was renamed to Preobrazenjska, Milovoja Micica Street is now Gorana Zekica Street (former president of the Serb Democratic Party of Srebrenica).

The East Bosnian Brigade Street has been renamed Nikola Tesla Street, Srebrenica Detachment Street is now Ivo Andric Street, and Brotherhood and Unity Square is renamed Youth Square.

Previously unnamed streets have also been given names, including Muse Cazima Catica, Old Town, Crkviste, Doctor Sabit Begic, Slobodan Ilic, Doctor Desimir Mitrovic, Jerej Boban Lazarevic, January 16th, Gavrilo Princip, Eniz Hasanovic, Mehmed-pasha Sokolovic, and Jezdimir Dangic.

Bosniak representatives did not participate in the selection of the new names, and the majority of the assembly responsible for naming streets, squares, and parts of settlements is held by Serbian political representatives.

Most of the street names in Srebrenica were in place until 1996. Then, by the decision of the local government, which was made up of Serbian nationality councilors, all names were changed. Six years later, the old street names were reinstated by a decision of the new assembly majority.

Last week, Srebrenica Mayor Mladen Grujicic also stated that negotiations were underway within municipal and party bodies to initiate a proposal to change the name of Srebrenica.

This has sparked strong and sharp reactions, N1 writes.
