NGO “Stop ugrizu” Recalls that New Law on Animal Protection is in Accordance with EU Standards

azil_psiThe nonprofit organization “Stop ugrizu” from Zenica recalled once again that the proposed amendment to the Law on Animal Protection in B&H is in accordance with EU standards.

‘’The EU does not have a right to regulate the number stray dogs. This remains exclusively the responsibility of member countries. The EU has supported the adoption of international guidelines to control the number of stray dogs of the World Organization for Animal Health, and which recommends that killing dogs should not be used as the only method to control their number, and that humane methods to kill strays should be used’’, said in a statement.

They stress that any person who has read the proposal to the amendments of the Law by member of the B&H Parliamentary Assembly Nermina Zaimović-Uzunović can see that the proposed amendments of the Law fit the guidelines supported by the EU, because the proposal as a method to control dogs uses humane methods in addition to euthanization, such as sterilization, castration, adoption and asylums.

They add that in addition to the proposed changes of the Law being in accordance with EU standards, it is important to say that euthanization (which individuals portray as the brutal killing of dogs) has already been applied in most of the advanced European countries.
