The Federal Ministry of Education and Science will contact the authors of the secondary school textbooks and request that the recommendations made under the Initiative for Textbook Edition and Adaptation in Primary and Secondary School Education should be taken into account.
This was emphasized yesterday during a discussion on the project ‘’Gender-based Violence – A Look From Another Angle: Violence in Youth Relationships’’ implemented by the Foundation ‘’Girls’’ (‘’Cure’’), and this Initiative is part of that project.
Four high school story books, history, philosophy and sociology textbooks were analyzed, and it was found that they contained a large number of stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, and the biggest problem was the way that a woman is represented, as well as some definitions.
‘’In most cases, women are represented as mothers, housewives, cooks, and men are scientists, physicists, mathematicians, pilots or astronauts. Therefore, we wanted to make some balance and improve the representation of women in textbooks ,’’ said Denija Hidic from the Foundation ‘’Girls’’ yesterday.
After analyzing the textbooks, a letter was sent to the Gender Equality Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and it was pointed to discriminatory definitions and stereotypical representations of women, which are not in accordance with the BiH Constitution, the Law on Gender Equality, or with the international conventions which BiH signed, Vijesti.ba news portal reports.
