OpenAI launches GPT-4.5: Why it’s huge, expensive, and the largest

The leader in artificial intelligence (AI), OpenAI, announced on Thursday the latest model for chatting, starting a limited rollout of GPT4.5. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman described the new model as “huge” and “expensive.” He added that “it feels like talking to a thoughtful person.”

OpenAI, in a document describing the new chatbot, called GPT-4.5 its “largest and most informed model so far,” emphasizing that interaction with it feels more natural.

The company stated that the new model possesses a broader knowledge base, better emotional intelligence, and improved contextual understanding, making it highly suitable for problem-solving, writing, and programming.

It is also stated that GPT-4.5 has fewer “hallucinations.” This is the common term for cases when AI models give inaccurate or misleading responses.

Ten times more efficient in data processing

According to the document, GPT-4.5 is more than 10 times more efficient in computational processing than its predecessor GPT-4. It can solve problems with less time and resource consumption.

GPT-4.5 is currently available only to users subscribed to ChatGPT Pro. This is a 200-dollar-per-month plan that provides the highest level of access to OpenAI products.

Altman posted on the X network that OpenAI wanted to simultaneously launch the new model on both ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Pro plans. However, this was not possible due to a lack of graphics processing units (GPUs) needed for support. He added that OpenAI will add tens of thousands of GPUs next week. This will make GPT-4.5 available also as part of the ChatGPT Plus plan, which costs 20 dollars per month.

Forbes’ estimate is that Altman’s net worth amounts to 1.1 billion dollars, thanks to his investments in Reddit, Stripe, and the nuclear fusion company Helion.

New financing

The release of GPT-4.5 comes less than two years after OpenAI launched GPT-4. Only a few weeks after the company introduced “Operator.” That is an AI assistant designed to perform tasks on the internet for users, such as ordering groceries, buying tickets, and downloading lectures.

OpenAI is also planning a new round of financing, which could double its value to an incredible 340 billion dollars. If realized, this round would place OpenAI far above competitors like Elon Musk’s company xAI (whose value is estimated at around 50 billion dollars) and the firm Anthropic, supported by Amazon, which currently is valued at 18 billion dollars and is reportedly negotiating a new financing round that would raise it to 60 billion dollars, Forbes writes.
