The former president of Albania, Ilir Meta, was arrested on Monday by order of the Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Fight against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), according to Albanian media.
Local media report that he was arrested on his way to the headquarters of the Freedom Party, of which he is the president. As stated, the arrest is related to the investigations that SPAK has been conducting for some time on the ČEZ DIA case, which is related to property investigation and lobbying.
A financial investigation is also being conducted against Meta and his family. Former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha confirmed the arrest of Meta and described it as “political persecution”.
