Chief Prosecutor of ICTY Serge Brammertz said that the cooperation protocol between the Prosecutor’s Offices (PO) in Serbia and in BiH will be signed soon. POs of Serbia and BiH will be able to exchange evidence and information in cases related to war crimes.
”The signing of the protocol between the State Prosecutor of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the War Crimes Prosecutor of Serbia is already a year late. We support this important initiative that will offer practical solutions to improve the investigative capacity, and it will also strengthen the cooperation between prosecutors. Although my office is not directly involved in the negotiations, we expect the signing of the protocol soon”, said Brammertz for FENA
Taking into account the fact that the trial and appeals in the tribunal are closer to completion, Brammertz said that the ICTY is intensifying its support to local POs for prosecuting war criminals.
”It is advancement when the POs in region take responsibility to ensure that the crimes committed during the war are punished.Authorities, especially in BiH, still face difficulties in prosecuting war crimes, and solving a large number of unprocessed items.
In the UN Security Council I gave my support to Serbia and BiH to make the necessary measures in order to solve that situation and to finish investigative materials processing that the Prosecutor’s Office of ICTY handed down to local POs and ,when necessary, prosecute war criminals”, said Brammertz
