The meeting between Russian and American Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump ended without a concrete agreement. However, the interlocutors expressed their readiness to continue negotiations in order to finally end the war in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump assessed that significant progress had been made, and said that the two leaders had found common ground on a number of issues.
“The meeting was very productive. We reached agreement on a number of issues. There are several important issues on which we have not reached our goal, but we have made some progress,” Trump said.
Trump added that there is a good chance that the Ukrainian crisis will be resolved.
He announced that he would soon inform NATO allies and “people who he thinks would be appropriate to inform”, including Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, about the conversation with Putin.
He thanked Putin and added that he could visit Moscow soon.
The Russian president said that he wanted to put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.
“The current situation in Ukraine is a tragedy and a great pain for Russia,” Putin said, stressing that the agreements should be a support, not only for finding a solution to the Ukrainian crisis, but also for establishing Russian-US relations, including business ones.
Putin believes that the dialogue between the presidents of Russia and the US has “matured”, and that it was necessary to move to dialogue and move away from confrontation.
“I want to believe that the understanding we have established will open the way to peace in Ukraine. We count on Kiev not to create obstacles to progress in the resolution that is in sight,” Putin said.
Putin and Trump met last night in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting lasted almost three hours.
