This was stated to Federal News Agency by the mayor of Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje Sead Causevic, saying that most of the projects were carried out in villages, where the roads were in a bad condition.
“The municipality has, in cooperation with the higher levels, implemented road pavement projects of about eight kilometers. We have also signed new contracts for 2019, worth about 200,000 BAM, and already secured sixty percent of the funds,” he stressed. Mayor emphasized that one of the priorities of the municipal government will be to asphalt the remaining 10-15 kilometers of road, mainly in remote areas of the municipality. He also emphasized that the beginning of the realization of the so-called, “generational project of the reconstruction of streets“, officially started in 2018.
Although settlement in the area stretches back to prehistoric times, the town with Gornji Vakuf name arose in the 16th century in the location of the existing settlement called Česta. The name Gornji Vakuf refers to the fact that the town was established as a waqf (Vakuf) by Bosniak nobility. Mehmed-beg Stočanin, a famous Bosniak bey, is the founder of Gornji Vakuf. This town has a typical Bosnian čaršija, which is common in Central Bosnia.
Gornji Vakuf had a population of about 10,000 Croats and 14,000 Bosniaks. On 11 January 1993 the first clashes between the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) took place.
