Luanda, the capital of Angola, is the most expensive city in the world – at least for Western experts, replacing the Hong Kong, which is now on the second place.
The research was done by the consultant firm Mercer, and it took into account different parameters such as the costs of Western living standards. Primarily, it compared the cost of food, accommodation, public transport, clothing and recreational activities.
For instance, the price of hamburgers in Luanda is almost 13 euros, but when converted from currency to currency, in London it is only five euros.
Angola is one of the largest oil exporters in the world. Since the end of the civil war in 2002, the number of employees of international companies in Luanda has increased, making residents willing to pay high prices to live in a safe environment.
