Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation today, following criticism that he remained in office after the presidential election held in December was canceled.
“In order to spare Romania and Romanian citizens from a crisis, I am leaving office on Wednesday,” Iohannis said in a speech in Bucharest.
Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the presidential election in December due to strong suspicions of Russian interference.
The court said it was annulling the entire process for electing a Romanian president and ordered a rerun to ensure the validity and legality of the election.
The decision came just days after intelligence documents were declassified that showed Russia had run a coordinated online campaign to promote far-right outsider Calin Georgescu, who allegedly won the most votes in the first round.
