Routes: “NATO will continue to strengthen Ukraine”

Doorstep statement by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ahead of the informal meeting of European Union Leaders

NATO countries are considering possible security guarantees for Ukraine after a peace agreement, said the Alliance’s Secretary General Mark Rutte.

NATO, Rutte emphasized, will continue to strengthen, empower Ukraine so that it can sit at the negotiating table.

Rutte said that strong security guarantees will be needed to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine.

At a joint press conference with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in Bratislava, he said that there is no doubt that Europe has a vital role to play in ensuring peace in Ukraine.

“We will have to increase military spending to significantly more than three percent of gross domestic product and that will be a new task for the Alliance,” Rutte said.
