Moscow believes that the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is a political murder and will lead to an escalation of tensions in the region, reports Anadolu.
Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Middle East and African countries, Mikhail Bogdanov, commented on the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran in a statement for the RIA news agency.
Stressing that this is a very bad situation, Bogdanov said: “This is an absolutely unacceptable political killing and will lead to further escalation of tensions.”
The Palestinian movement Hamas confirmed that its leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed this morning in an airstrike in Tehran.
Hamas announced that Israel carried out the attack in which the political leader of the Palestinian movement, Haniyeh, was killed.
The statement states that Haniyeh was in Tehran to participate in the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Iranian president Masud Pezeshkian.
Iranian state television previously reported that the Hamas leader was killed in a terrorist attack on the residence where he was staying in the Iranian capital.
Haniyeh was elected head of the Hamas Political Bureau on May 6, 2017, replacing Khalid Meshaal.
