A delegation from Canton Sarajevo (CS), led by Minister of Economy Zlatko Mijatovic, visited Girona, where a meeting was held with Vice President of the Girona Government Gemma Geis and Vice President of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Organization Joan Plana.
During the meeting, they discussed the results of the Sarajevo-Girona direct flight, as well as activities necessary to ensure its continuation and development in the coming period.
It was confirmed that the route will continue operating during the winter season, as well as in the spring-summer period of 2026. This guarantees its continuity and strengthens long-term cooperation between the two regions.
The Sarajevo-Girona direct connection, established for the first time in 2025, represents a historic milestone, as it is the first direct flight linking the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with Spain.
From the beginning of operations until October 31st of this year, 21.973 passengers were recorded on 140 flights, and the average plane occupancy in July exceeded 90%, confirming strong interest from travelers, both tourists and business passengers.
Minister Mijatovic emphasized that this route is much more than an air connection.
“It represents a bridge of cooperation between Girona and Sarajevo, economically, touristically, and culturally. We continue to work on strengthening it, because it brings concrete benefits to citizens, the economy, and the tourism sector of CS,” said Mijatovic.
BiH’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Vesna Andree Zaimovic, highlighted that this line clearly demonstrates mutual intention to deepen cooperation and increase exchange between the two countries.
On behalf of the hosts, Joan Plana reminded that the connection between Girona and Sarajevo has deep roots.
“Solidarity with BiH, and especially with Sarajevo, has lasted since the war years. Today’s cooperation through the air route represents a modern continuation of those ties and a strong incentive for the tourist and economic development of both regions,” Plana said.
According to official data from Sarajevo International Airport, in November, the two-millionth passenger of this year was recorded, which represents an important indicator of growth in air traffic and increased connectivity of Sarajevo with European destinations, including the new Sarajevo-Girona route.
On this occasion, the tourist offer of CS was presented, and meetings were held with representatives of the tourist and business sectors of Girona and Sarajevo, where it was emphasized that this route opens new opportunities for the development of tourism, economy, investment, and institutional cooperation, the Protocol and Press Service of CS reported.
