The Cantonal Court in Sarajevo today handed down a first-instance verdict in the death of two-and-a-half-year-old girl Džena Gadžun, finding the first defendant Suad Rožajac guilty of a criminal offense against human health and a criminal offense of negligent medical treatment and sentencing him to 10 years in prison.
Rožajac was banned from practicing medicine for eight years.
The second defendant Nina Jovanović was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, with a ban on practicing medicine and holding office for six years.
The third defendant Jasmina Halimić, convicted of abuse of office, received three years in prison and a ban on practicing medicine for three years.
As a reminder, Džena Gadžun underwent surgery at the private clinic “Bejtović” in Sarajevo in November 2021. During the eyelid surgery, complications arose and the child died on November 14, 2021 at the University Clinical Center Sarajevo.
The indictment in this case was filed in June 2023, and the trial began the same year.
The first-instance verdict is subject to appeal.
