Saudi Arabia has executed six Iranian nationals for drug smuggling. Following the executions, Tehran summoned the Saudi ambassador for talks.
The Saudi Ministry of Interior announced that the Iranian citizens were arrested and charged with smuggling hashish into Saudi Arabia, after which they were sentenced to death. The locations of the executions were not disclosed.
In Tehran, the Saudi ambassador was summoned to express a “strong protest” against Saudi Arabia’s actions. Additionally, Iran demanded an explanation as to why the executions were carried out.
Under a 2023 agreement brokered by China, Riyadh and Tehran restored diplomatic relations after years of hostility. Their animosity had threatened the stability and security of the Middle East.
