Schmidt: Bosnia and Herzegovina must use the opportunity to open Negotiations with the EU

The opening of accession negotiations with the European Union is of essential importance, not only for the economic and social progress of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also for the strengthening of stability and prosperity in the country and the region, said the high representative in BiH Christian Schmidt.

He emphasized that it is of the utmost importance that the BiH authorities meet the necessary conditions in order to take advantage of the opportunity and start negotiations on membership with the European Union.

“Engagement with the European Union represents an opportunity for the transformation of Bosnia and Herzegovina”, said Schmidt and added that “it is of the utmost importance that the country uses this moment to further integrate into the European family and open up space for the numerous advantages that this integration brings”.

He also pointed out that it is necessary to urgently reform the Election Law in connection with the integrity of elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is of key importance for respecting democratic principles, ensuring transparency and strengthening citizens’ trust in the electoral process.

“Elections must fully and unquestionably reflect the democratic will of the voters,” said Schmidt.

Schmidt participated in the diplomatic forum in Antalya, where, emphasizing the key importance of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s active engagement with the European Union and compliance with the Dayton Peace Agreement, in various formats, he spoke with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán, presidents and ministers of foreign affairs of countries of the Western Balkans.
