Serbian President announces his Resignation

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Wednesday that he plans to resign soon and is considering running for prime minister.

Vučić, whose second term expires in May next year, is under strong pressure to resign due to months of anti-government protests.

At the same time, his ruling Serbian Progressive Party is making suggestions that he continue his political career as prime minister, given that the constitution prohibits him from running for president a third time.

Asked on Radio Belgrade whether he plans to resign in three to four months, Vučić said “maybe even sooner” and that he thinks about running for prime minister every day, Hina reports.

“And I will not tell the people that I have shortened my term, but ‘I have resigned,'” Vučić said and announced an “important meeting” within the ruling SNS, the party from which he formally stepped down in May 2023.

He also added that “the elections will be in a few months” and that it is a technical issue.

“The elections will be in three, four months. They won’t be in July or August, and whether they will be called then is another matter,” Vučić said.
