Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Slovenia and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon pointed out that the process of recognizing Palestine as a state has begun, which is the first, irreversible step.
The Government has initiated the procedure for the recognition of Palestine, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and announced that the Government will send the decision to the National Assembly (Parliament) within a month, ie by June 13.
Fajon added that this is the first, irreversible step.
Earlier, according to unofficial information, it was stated that there were disagreements between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office due to the Government’s announcement about the start of procedures for the recognition of Palestine.
It is stated that the Minister of Foreign Affairs wants Slovenia to recognize Palestine together with Spain and Ireland, which should recognize Palestine on May 21, but that date is not yet certain.
In the office of the Slovenian Prime Minister, they unofficially want the process of Slovenian recognition of Palestine to take place independently of the process of recognition of Palestine in Spain and Ireland, and it would be in the interest of Slovenia for more countries to recognize Palestine.
