A senior European Union (EU) official has said that some EU countries are preparing to reopen their embassies in Damascus, the capital of Syria.

A high-ranking EU official reiterated the EU’s satisfaction with the fall of the Baath regime in Syria and said that the Union is closely following the developments, reports Anadolia.

The unnamed official said the EU was generally committed to the principles of preserving territorial integrity, establishing an inclusive government and protecting minorities for the future of Syria, and said: “Unbelievable. It was wiped out in 14 years and 15 days.”

Noting that control of a significant part of the country, including its capital, Damascus, has come under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) led by Ahmed al-Shara (Abu Mohammed al-Julani), the official said, “By the way, he no longer he wants to be known as al-Julani. He wants to be remembered by his name. This is also a good development.”

“We need to know the difference between the interim government in Idlib and the HTS there. The interim government there was far from terrorist or jihadist. Now we will see if this will be implemented in the 48 percent of the country they control,” the official added.

He stressed that the future countries to be determined by the Syrians and that the EU is ready to support this.

“Some EU member states are planning to reopen their embassies in Damascus,” the official said, adding that many EU members, especially member states in the Mediterranean, are very interested in Syria .
