A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolks) said.
It was reported that tsunami warnings were issued in several countries, and that people near the coast were told to move to higher ground or deeper inland.
Philvolks warned of possible aftershocks, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami with waves of one to three meters was possible.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea near the city of Manay.
Civil Defense official Raffi Alejandro said one person had died.
