A large number of students from Belgrade set off on a protest march on foot towards Novi Sad on Thursday.
Students from Belgrade faculties set off towards Novi Sad at around 10:30 a.m. to support their Novi Sad colleagues in blocking three bridges in the city, marking three months since the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station, in which 15 people lost their lives.
During the gathering, chants of “We want justice” could be heard, as well as banners calling on the government to fulfill their demands.
Serbian Finance Minister Siniša Mali said today that an additional 12.01 billion dinars had been provided for higher education and announced a reduction in student tuition costs by around 50 percent.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dačić said that members of the Ministry of Interior would fully secure the route of the students’ walk, which began in front of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade and will end tomorrow evening in front of the Novi Sad Railway Station.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Wednesday pardoned 13 people against whom criminal proceedings had previously been initiated in connection with the blockades and protests that have been taking place in Serbia for more than two months.
The students who initiated the blockades and protests after the tragic event in Novi Sad are, in addition to the above, demanding the publication of all documentation on the reconstruction of the Railway Station, the filing of criminal charges against the attackers of the demonstrators, and a 20 percent increase in the education budget.
In a speech on Monday, the Serbian president said that the authorities would meet all four of the students’ demands.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has resigned, AA writes.
