The director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić, said today that there are structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including those in Sarajevo, who, he said, want to put him in prison and discredit the Center politically and institutionally.
“The calculation is obvious – I need to be put in prison, the Memorial Center politically and institutionally discredited, and then, I guess, they will finally be able to put their hands on what has eluded them all these years,” wrote Suljagić on the social network Iks.
He added that the Memorial Center has been going through challenges in recent weeks, from hearing associates to things that, as he stated, he cannot yet speak about publicly due to their nature.
Suljagić emphasized that he does not think that this is only a product of the government’s policy in that part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“This is happening with the complicity and, by all accounts, with the active support of people who have been treated as some sort of ‘deserving’ elite in Sarajevo for the past thirty years. People whom Sarajevo gave unconditional trust and political space, even though in three decades almost everything they touched has withered, collapsed or disappeared,” wrote Suljagić.
According to him, now, as it seems to him, they have decided to “throw the last thing they haven’t managed to get – the Memorial Center – to the wolves”.
He assessed that they apparently forgot one thing – that the Memorial Center is not anyone’s private property.
“It is not a prize for suitability or a trophy that is given to those who sit in Sarajevo’s cabinets long enough. And, what is most important – neither I, nor the people who work at the Memorial Center, nor the people because of whom this center exists, have not yet said the last word. Thank God, we are also wondering something,” concluded Suljagić.
