The Association of Witnesses and Victims of Genocide and the Association of Mothers’ Movement of the Srebrenica and Žepa enclaves sent a letter to Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on Friday demanding the release of the activist, Aida Ćorović, reports Radio Free Europe.
On Thursday, Ćorović received a summons to report to serve her prison sentence, because she did not want to pay the fine imposed for throwing eggs at a mural of war crimes convict Ratko Mladić.
“Don’t make Ms. Corović the case of Alexei Navalny and Vladimir Putin of yourself. By freeing Mrs. Ćorović, you will not only confirm that you absolutely rule Serbia, and that you really like it to be said and known, but you will also show that you, an inveterate denier of genocide and glorifier of war criminals, can, at least once in your life, comply with a just and well-founded request “, states the letter of the Association from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ćorović and activist Jelena Jaćimović were detained after they threw several eggs on the mural of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić in Njegoševa Street in Belgrade on the International Day of the Fight Against Fascism.
On December 14, 2023, she received the final verdict of the Misdemeanor Court of Appeal on a fine of 100,000 dinars (about 850 euros).
The verdict states that Ćorović violated the Law on Public Order and Peace, because she “threw eggs in the direction of a residential building” and insulted police officers while performing their duties.
The associations called the verdict “fictional and political”.
Ćorović told Radio Free Europe on Thursday that she was given eight days to report to the “Padinska Skela” prison to serve her three-month prison sentence.
