According to the reports of domestic and international organizations that monitor the issue of weapons, the possession of weapons in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is quite widespread. Although the authorities in BiH have taken certain actions, there is still a significant number of illegal weapons.
According to the data of the Coordinating Committee for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in BiH, in 2022, 1.234 weapons in the illegal possession of citizens, 49.889 pieces of ammunition and 31 pieces of mine explosives, and 10.8 kilograms of explosives were confiscated.
Penalties are not obstacles.
Possession of illegal weapons is clearly punishable, but a large number of people own weapons because of the feeling of insecurity in the country in which they live.
The fact is that too many illegal weapons in BiH remained after the war, but the actions of police agencies daily indicate that the trend of possession is still at an undesirable level.
Data from the Federal Police Administration showed the number of seized illegal weapons during the past years.
“In the past year 2022, the most weapons confiscated in the Federation of BiH (FBiH) were pistols (265), and almost 11.000 pieces of ammunition were confiscated. 11.3 kilograms of explosives were confiscated, and automatic and semi-automatic rifles were confiscated (57), while 6 M-48 rifles were confiscated. 55 other types of rifles were confiscated,” the data of the Federal Police Administration states, Klix.ba reports.
