Croatia currently records the highest increase in consumer prices in the region, which causes dissatisfaction among citizens.
As a reaction to price increases, an initiative to boycott shopping and retail chains, planned for Friday, January 24, is spreading on social networks, Croatian media write.
Messages circulating on platforms such as WhatsApp, Reddit and Facebook are urging citizens not to buy anything that day, following examples from Italy and the United Kingdom, where similar actions have led to lower prices and higher wages.
One of the most frequently shared messages reads: “On January 24 in Croatia, there is a boycott against high food prices. People are urged not to buy anything on that day. In Great Britain, similar actions led to a drop in fuel prices and an increase in wages. If 10 percent people in Croatia participate, it would be a big blow to the retail chains.”
Many citizens expressed their support for this initiative, arguing that the only way to force traders to reduce prices is to hit their profits. Many comments point out that nothing is lost by a one-day boycott, while the effects could be significant.
