The Chinese company Geely has produced a new LFP-typebattery. This battery can withstand a million kilometers and retains more than 90 percent of its capacity at temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius.
Geely wants to revolutionize the electric car market with a new battery that provides above-average durability.
The new battery is an LFP type (lithium-iron-phosphate), the modules are 40 percent smaller than the standard ones, and Geely claims that it lasts a million kilometers and that it has a lifespan of even 50 years.
Also, the new battery charges faster and can withstand very low temperatures better. The battery will be able to be charged 3,500 times, and charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 17 minutes and 4 seconds. In addition, the new battery manages to retain 90.54 percent of its capacity at a temperature of -30 degrees Celsius. The battery has an energy density of 192 Wh/kg.
The secret of the long lifespan of the new battery lies in its construction. The battery has doped electrode materials in its composition in order to reduce the speed of the internal chemical reaction. The battery was repeatedly subjected to extreme tests, and this time the Chinese went to the limit.
Namely, the battery was first pierced with eight steel needles with a diameter of five millimeters and left in that state for an hour. The company even fired a 5.8mm bullet into the battery and it didn’t ignite. The battery was also submerged in seawater, thrown into a fire, and even run over with a 26-ton roller. The battery did not suffer any significant damage.
So far, Geely has not announced when it will start producing the new battery, but it is certain that the competition has been thrown in the face, Klix.ba writes.
