At today’s session, the City Council of the City of Sarajevo passed a decision giving consent to the Mayor of Sarajevo to take all necessary legal actions in connection with the engagement of lawyer Nicola Brigid in the criminal proceedings being conducted in Milan against those responsible for sniper attacks on citizens during the siege of Sarajevo.
With this decision, the Mayor and the Attorney General’s Office of the City of Sarajevo are enabled, within their legal competences, to initiate and implement all legal, technical and administrative activities with the aim of formally acceding the City of Sarajevo to criminal proceedings before the competent judicial authorities in Italy.
With this, the City of Sarajevo for the first time institutionally enters into an international criminal proceeding related to the crimes committed against its citizens during the siege.
The planned activities include the systematic and thorough collection of data and relevant documentation about the citizens of Sarajevo who were killed by sniper shots, including identification data of victims, circumstances of suffering, testimonies, available material evidence, as well as archival and institutional documentation.
As explained, special focus will be on cooperation with victims’ families, competent institutions, archives, witness associations and other relevant entities in order to ensure complete and credible documentation.
The goal of these activities is multiple – to ensure the institutional participation of the City in the process, to protect the dignity of the victims and their families, to contribute to the determination of individual criminal responsibility, and to make a strong contribution to international efforts in the prosecution of war crimes.
The decision of the Sarajevo City Council represents an important step in the direction of strengthening international legal cooperation and the fight against impunity, confirming the commitment of the City of Sarajevo to, on behalf of its citizens, persevere in the search for justice and the truth about the crimes committed during the siege.
At today’s session, the Proposal of the Work Plan of the City of Sarajevo for 2026 was adopted, the Decision on the accession of the City of Sarajevo to the ICLEI Network (Local Administration for Sustainability) was adopted, and the Decision on salaries and benefits in the bodies of the City of Sarajevo was amended.
