[wzslider autoplay=”true”]In the presence of many friends and fans, the Women’s basketball team Jedinstvo in Tuzla marked the 27th anniversary of winning the European Championship, when the players of the club won against Italian Primigi with the score of 74:70, on the 22nd of March 1989 in Florence.

“There are many impressions and experiences from that period. A lot of effort was invested in that victory, but girls who play in this club today are very promising as well. From time to time, I go to their trainings and look forward to these moments. My heart is full when I see them playing. This is a generation whose time is yet to come and we should provide opportunities to them, in order to achieve great results” said Mihajlo Vukovic, the coach of Jedinstvo back then.

Mara Lakic-Brcaninovic, former captain and now coach in Jedinstvo, remembered their trip to Florence on the 20th of March 1989.

“Everything was going chronologically and step by step. This great result was not achieved overnight. Two Olympic cycles passed, and we became champions of Yugoslavia in this period. We played match by match without a break and every new victory was bringing us closer to the title. Qualifying for the finals in Florence was the same for us as that we already became champions, but coach Vukovic told us that we conquered Europe, but that we have to confirm it in the last match,” remembered Lakic-Brcaninovic with a smile.

“Two buses of loyal fans came with us and even though carabinieri and numerous staff were on the sidelines, our fans were able to run into the field. There was an eruption of enthusiasm. We were kissing each other, hugging, jumping and screaming. When we returned to Tuzla, thousands of people welcomed us in the hall of Mejdan. It was a welcome to remember. The whole city came to greet us and to see the trophy that we won, but there was no time for celebration, since the new championship of Yugoslavia was in front of us,” said Lakic-Brcaninovic.

Historical success achieved: Razija Mujanovic, Mara Lakic, Vesna Pođanin, Dragana Jeftic, Smilja Radjenovic, Zorica Dragicevic, Naida Hot, Jadranka Savic, Ilvana Zvizdic and Stojanka Dosic, with coaches Mihajlo Vukovic and Zdravko Dugonjic.
