On Sunday, the public institution Cantonal Hospital Zenica successfully performed a new organ explantation from a brain-dead donor, this time aged 21, whose brain death was diagnosed on August 3rd and which resulted in the first heart transplant in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
As stated on the official website of the Zenica hospital, after the brain death was established, and in accordance with legal procedures, a conversation was held with the family of the deceased patient in terms of organ donation.
“Thanks to the family that agreed to organ donation, multi-organ explantation was performed. Multi-organ explantation was carried out in cooperation with the medical teams of the employees of Public Health Institution Sarajevo University Clinical Center and the employees of Public Utility Cantonal Hospital Zenica, led by the transplant coordinator M.Sc. Biomed. sci prim. Senad Causevic and deputy coordinator Assoc. Ph.D. prim. Nermin Rizvanovic. The heart and both kidneys were explanted. The postoperative course of transplanted patients is going smoothly for now”, the Cantonal Hospital Zenica points out.
The heart transplant, which was performed for the first time in our country, was performed by a team of doctors from SarajevoUniversity Clinical Center, headed by Prof. Dr. Nermir Granov, while the kidneys were transplanted at the Clinic for Urology of Sarajevo University Clinical Center, under the guidance of Dr. Osman Hadziosmanovic.
“The management of Cantonal Hospital Zenica, expresses respect and gratitude to the family of donors for their humanity, who saved three lives with their consent, as well as gratitude to the medical team of employees of Cantonal Hospital Zenica, and Sarajevo University Clinical Center, which, in a professional manner and in accordance with the principles of medical ethics, successfully participated in the execution of the procedure of explantation of donated organs”, emphasized the Cantonal Hospital Zenica. They also thanked the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDC) for their support.
Recently, on June 29th, the Zenica hospital performed the explantation of donated organs and tissues from a 40-year-old patient, who was also diagnosed with brain death, and whose family was given consent for organ donation.
At that time, the authorities were directed towards the Sarajevo University Clinical Center and the Tuzla University Clinical Center, N1 writes.
