Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Association, was arrested today as part of a corruption investigation.
Rubiales was arrested upon his arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic.
He is suspected of receiving illegal commissions when he negotiated a lucrative contract to organize the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia, according to Spanish and British media.
Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, who denies any wrongdoing.
The media reported that after exiting the plane, Rubiales was put into a black van with several members of the Civil Guard.
Police now have 72 hours to question Rubiales, who was in the Dominican Republic when police raided his home last month.
They also searched the headquarters of the Spanish Football Association and made several arrests.
Rubiales will be tried separately for sexual assault for kissing Spain’s Jenna Hermoso on the mouth after last year’s World Cup final.
Hermoso and her national team teammates said the kiss was unwanted and humiliating.
Rubiales was forced to resign because of this scandal, but he denied any guilt.
