The Israeli army raised combat readiness today in the midst of escalation along the border with Lebanon.
Tensions escalated between Hezbollah and Israel after Saturday’s rocket attack on Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights.
Israel blamed Hezbollah for the attack, which killed 12 people and injured 40, while the Lebanese group denied any involvement.
“We are significantly increasing our readiness for the next phase of fighting in the north, while at the same time we are engaged in fighting in Gaza,” army spokeswoman Ella Wawyah said.
Wawyah called Saturday’s rocket attack on the Golan Heights a “serious incident”, and added that the Israelis “will respond to it in an appropriate manner”.
According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the army expects the fighting to last several days.
Tensions have risen along Lebanon’s border with Israel amid cross-border attacks between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, as Tel Aviv presses ahead with its deadly offensive on the Gaza Strip, where more than 39,300 people have been killed since last October following a Hamas attack, Anadolu writes.
