The Kremlin said on Sunday that the US-Israeli aggression in the Middle East has caused devastating consequences for the global economy, which will have a long-term impact.
Speaking to the Russian state news agency Tass, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We are now seeing extremely devastating consequences of this war for the global economy and for regional geopolitics. These consequences are unlikely to be short-term; they will have a long-term impact,” Anadolu Agency reported.
Russia has not yet made a decision on joining the Peace Council, which was established by US President Donald Trump, he said, adding that “this concept seems less relevant than before in the context of US aggression in the Middle East.”
The Peace Council was officially established in January, when 19 countries signed its charter in Davos. Initially, the structure was created to govern the Gaza Strip as part of an agreement between Israel and Hamas, but Washington is actively promoting the idea of using the body to prevent and resolve conflicts in other regions.
Commenting on the Russian parliamentarians’ visit to the United States and the meetings held there, Peskov said the trip was “useful” and that the Kremlin hopes that contacts between Russian and American parliamentarians will continue.
“Of course, this trip is very useful,” he said. “We hope that these contacts will be followed by new ones, perhaps more substantive ones,” he said.
A group of five Russian lawmakers visited the United States at the invitation of American Congresswoman Anna Pauline Luna this week.
The meeting between Russian and American parliamentarians was held in Washington and was attended by representatives of both American political parties, Republicans and Democrats.
The agenda included bilateral issues, the Ukrainian crisis, the conflict in the Middle East and broader Russian-American relations.
“In any case, this will make a great contribution to the revitalization of the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. If the American side is ready and agrees to this,” Peskov said.
