The leader of South Korea’s main opposition party, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the southern city of Busan.

Lee was touring the construction site of the new Gadeokdo Airport and talking to reporters when he was attacked.

Lee suffered “jugular vein damage.”

He will “soon undergo surgery” at Seoul National University Hospital after being transferred there from Busan, the spokesman said, describing the assassination of Lee as an act of “terrorism” and a “serious threat to democracy”.
