Nana Ajka Lokmić, who was the oldest resident of Bosnia and Herzegovina, died in Sarajevo on Saturday at the age of 111.
She lived in a house about 150 years old in Sumbuluša, in the Sarajevo neighborhood of Stari Grad. She was one of 12 centenarians in the area of this Sarajevo municipality. She was born in 1914 in Bosanski Šamac, and as a child she was orphaned and came to live with her relatives in Sarajevo.
After marrying Nurija Lokmić, she moved from Hadžijamakova street to Mejlijina, to the family house where she lived until her death. They had four children. They had, as she said, a beautiful life. She lost Nuria 40 years ago.
Her daughter Zumreta Dedajić, in an interview with AA, said that she was not only the oldest person in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in the whole of Europe, from where certain associations and journalists had already contacted them with requests for an interview.
In her last interview, which took place in the month of Ramadan, Lokmić remembered the old Ramadans, and on that occasion she said that she fasted from the age of seven to the age of 100. During the last decade of her life, her health and age did not allow her to practice religious obligations and customs.
“I forget things and sometimes swear. I’m sorry, but I can’t fast. Before, the house was always full in Ramadan. They always came and visited, but now they can’t anymore. I’m sorry that there are no earlier times”, said Ajka.
