The political consequences of the assassination attempt on the former US President Donald Trump will be enormous and “can only increase the electoral momentum in favor of Donald Trump – Reed Brody, a human rights lawyer and former assistant attorney general of New York, told France24.
“Trump’s raised fist will go down in history,” said Brody.
“Anyone who survives an assassination attempt becomes a martyr, there is a great increase in public sympathy,” he said.
He adds that Trump will likely use images of the event to further boost his election campaign.
Republicans and Trump supporters have already begun the political blame game, says France24’s Fraser Jackson, reporting from Washington.
“Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s son, blamed what he called the radical left for the attack,” Fraser said.
He also adds that Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, who was Trump’s short-list choice for vice president, “blamed the rhetoric that Joe Biden’s campaign had.”
The FBI on Sunday identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania as the “subject involved” in what it called an “assassination attempt” on Trump.
Although law enforcement officials have not released details about Crooks, US reporters have traced Crooks to Pennsylvania voter status records, which identify him as a registered Republican.
