Five more victims of the genocide committed in Srebrenica in the summer of 1995 were identified in the Memorial Center in Tuzla in recent days, the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced.
All five families who identified the victims also gave consent for their burial and, according to the consents given so far, the remains of 11 victims will be buried this year at the collective funeral in the Memorial Center of Srebrenica – Potočari, according to the announcement.
It is added that this is certainly not a final number, considering that families who want to bury the remains of their loved ones for final identification or consent for burial can decide until the beginning of July, when the final preparations for the collective funeral begin.
The victims who have been identified in the past few days have been identified through the DNA method, so that the final identification, as well as the consent for the burial, will then be accessed by the family members of these victims.
The Institute states that one of the victims identified in recent days is seventeen-year-old Beriz (Omera) Mujić, born in 1978 in Zvornik.
He was killed in July 1995 in the area of Sućeska near Bratunac, and his remains were exhumed in May 2023 in the area of the municipality of Srebrenica, according to the announcement.
Family members also identified Midhat (Adem) Bašić, born in 1973, in Pobuđe, Bratunac. He was killed in the summer of 1995 in the area of Zvornik, and his remains were exhumed in August 2000 from the primary mass grave of Grbavci-Lažeta, Zvornik. The family also confirmed the identity of Nevres (Mehemed) Salihović, born in 1970 in Biljača, Bratunac. He was 25 years old when he was killed, and his remains were exhumed in October 2004 from the secondary mass grave in Blječevo, Bratunac, according to the announcement.
Ahmet (Ismeta) Jašarević, born in 1971 in Blječeva, was also identified. He disappeared at the age of 24, in July 1995 in the area of the Zeleni Jadar locality.
