The Session on the Election of a new High Representative in BiH began in Sarajevo

The session of the Governing Board of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) began today in Sarajevo, where the election of a new high representative in BiH is being considered.

The members of the PIC Board of Directors held a meeting at the beginning of June, where Kristijan Šmit’s successor was to be elected.

He previously resigned from that position, due to, as the media reported, the pressure exerted on him by the United States of America (USA).

A new high representative was not appointed at that session, because no agreement was reached between the USA, which supports the appointment of the Italian Antonio Zanardi Landi as the new high representative, and France, Great Britain and Germany, which nominated Frenchman Rene Trokaz for the position.

After the unsuccessful election of a new high representative in early June, the US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina publicly threatened to “reexamine its role in the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina”, and, according to unnamed diplomatic sources, to withdraw funding for the work of the PIC.
