The Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina considered today the Information on the increased influx of migrants and the deterioration of the security situation in temporary reception centers, proposed by the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
BiH Minister of Security Nenad Nešić stated that it can be said that there have been a certain number of violent attacks within the migrant centers.
“What we will do is for our security forces to take all necessary measures and actions to prevent such events,” said Nešić.
He assessed that “we do not currently have a critical situation regarding the number of migrants, it is at the level of previous years or slightly lower.
Nesic added that as far as he was aware from the head of the delegation for negotiations with FRONTEX, the negotiations are proceeding at a good pace and that they expect to have an agreement on the table very soon.
“What is very important is that the delegation, which is made up of all three constituent peoples from the two entities, cooperates successfully, has no problems in cooperation and aims to better protect our border,” said Nešić, BHRT writes.
The Information states that an average of 1,504 migrants stayed in four temporary reception centers in BiH, with a total capacity of 4,592 places, during 2023, while an average of 2,603 people stayed in these centers in the first two months of 2024. Since the end of 2023, the security situation has worsened in all temporary reception centers, numerous criminal acts have been committed, including two murders of migrants.
The human resources of the Directorate for the Coordination of Police Bodies of BiH, which are engaged in the security of these centers, are extremely limited, and meet only a quarter of the real needs, and police officers are exposed to daily risks and dangers, the Ministry of Information Security states and proposes to expand the existing capacities of temporary reception centers. as well as activities on their adequate insurance.
The Council of Ministers of BiH tasked the Ministry of Security – Service for Affairs with Foreigners to analyze the current situation and submit information proposing the number of additional places in temporary reception centers for the accommodation of migrants in the area of the Una-Sana Canton, in order to avoid a worsening of the security situation in in the event of a sudden increased influx of migrants.
Also, the Ministry is tasked with looking at the possibilities of engaging private security agencies that, in cooperation with local ministries of interior affairs and with the financial support of international partners, would significantly improve overall security in areas where there are temporary reception centers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
