Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström resigned today and announced his retirement from politics.
The 50-year-old said that it was with a mixture of “sadness and pride” that he informed Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of his resignation.
Billström, who has been foreign minister in Kristersson’s cabinet since the coalition government took office in October 2022, did not give any reason for his decision.
“I’m only 50 years old and I look forward to contributing and working hard in other contexts,” said Billström.
During his tenure as the country’s top diplomat, Sweden completed NATO accession after a protracted process to convince Turkey and Hungary, whose ratifications were required for Sweden to become a member of the military alliance, Klix.ba writes.
